FTM Alliance of Los Angeles & Southern California Trans Outdoors (Los Angeles meets San Francisco in the middle) Camping in the Sequoia National Forest

July 14th-July 16th, 2006

This camping event is a perfect opportunity for the LA transgender community and SF transgender community to build friendships outside of our local circles. FTM Alliance is sponsoring their second camping trip to Sequoia. Meet in the middle at the beautiful Sequoias located in central California. All are welcome, including significant others and family members.

Dorst Campground - Elevation-6,800 feet located 14 miles northwest of Giant Forest via the Generals Highway, is a high-elevation campground that offers easy access to Muir Grove and some pleasant backcountry trails.

From 4:00-6:00 p.m. arrive at the Dorst Campground to meet other campers.

Reservations:  are under the name: Shane Louisell

Camping - Bring your tent, truck with a camper shell (we may have a tent for those who don't have one). Please let us know if you don't have a tent prior to the camping trip. We have reserved 7 campsites. Numbers 106-109 and 112-114. The sites are walk-in.

Directions:  From Big Stump Entrance, drive 1.5 miles northward on Highway 180 to Generals Highway. Turn right on the Generals Highway and travel approximately 17 miles to the entrance of Dorst Campground.

Events-

1). Hikes on Saturday and Sunday (please let me know if you would like to lead a hike).

2). Games-water balloon toss, cards, backgammon, etc.

Food - There is one metal, bear proof food-storage box provided at each campsite: Sizes vary. Please bring the food of your choice and a camping stove if you have one. FTM Alliance will provide a complete meal (dinner Saturday night) and other food items for a weenie roast and peanut butter sandwiches. No one will starve, but all campers are responsible for their own meals.

Parking/Carpooling - There is a $20.00 entrance fee for each car. I would strongly suggest carpooling.

Volunteers - If you have hiking skills, expertise on the Sequoia's, love to cook or some other skill you would like to share, we'd love your help. Please email me. shaneryanftm@yahoo.com

Reserving your spot - Please send $20.00 per person to FTM Alliance. You can also send it through FTM Alliance's paypal account.

It was extremely cold last year. I would suggest bringing a camping heater and warm clothes. You can buy a heater at any camping store.

FTM Alliance of Los Angeles, Inc., is a community-based organization dedicated to empowering the female-to-male [FTM] transgendered community, and to increasing the visibility and acceptance of FTMs in Southern California. We provide resources, support, and leadership opportunities to people assigned female at birth or in childhood who no longer feel that label is complete or accurate, as well as our significant others, families, friends, and allies. Through education, advocacy, and activism, we are committed to creating a society where everyone is free to choose and express their own gender.

Southern CA Trans Outdoors was created in January of 2003 to provide a safe, healthy, positive place for female-to-male, male-to-female, Inter-sexed, gender queer and other's on the gender variant scale, our friends, families, significant others and our allies to meet to enjoy the great diversity of Southern CA. We usually meet for monthly hikes, bike rides, dinner/lunch out, trips to local museums, camping trips, etc. NOTE: you do not need to be transgendered or know someone who is to join this group. ALL ARE WELCOME HERE. This group is owned and operated by Shane Ryan...

EnGendered Species: How we Do and Undo Gender

April 8 - May 13, 2006

The Art Department at Cal State University, Long Beach, and The Advocate Gallery at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center are pleased to present EnGendered Species, an international exhibition that questions the traditionally fixed binary classification of gender, exploring how we do or undo both the gendered body and gender as a performance, as well as gender as an endangered system. The show will bring together works by 28 artists from five countries. In addition to the gallery exhibitions and website, visitors to the EnGendered Species blog will extend the show by adding their own stories and images, at: http://www.art.csulb.edu/engenderedspecies.

EnGendered Species was conceived and curated by students in two Cal State Long Beach courses: an art history seminar taught by Dr. Karen Kleinfelder and a museum studies practice class taught by Victoria Bryan.

LGBTH Community Toastmasters Club

Hello Folks,

I am pleased to announce the formation of an LGBTH Community Toastmasters Club.

Come, practice giving speeches, learning confidence, eloquence, communication and leadership skills in a friendly, supportive environment. You don't even need to be bisexual, but we would like bisexual people to join us, and become better leaders and representatives of the community.

We will have new member kits available for the first 20 people who join on site.
