The National Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in dozens of cities across the United States and Canada.

This American Life

Testosterone. Testosterone is shorthand for "male" in most people's minds, and it carries a lot of negative connotations: competetiveness, promiscuity, love of explosions, painted torsos at sporting events. Yet we all have it -- men and women -- and studies show that its effects are a lot stranger, and a lot subtler than you might think.

This week, a man gets sick and loses his testosterone for four months, and his entire personality changes. And a transexual man finds himself dispensing expert romantic advice to both men and women.
