FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: eBook Galley for Review

LOREN CAMERON GIVES US HIS "MAN TOOL" loren@lorencameron.com

New eBook explores female-to-male surgery. Photographer Loren Cameron, author of the best-selling Body Alchemy: Transsexual Portraits, has now released his second book, which takes advantage of the World Wide Web to deliver a new look at female-to-male surgery.

His new book, "MAN TOOL: The Nuts and Bolts of Female-to-Male Surgery" addresses urgent and intimate questions about plastic surgery options for the female-to-male transsexual. Through anecdotal text and over forty, close-up photographs of body modifications, it explores personal issues about sex and gender relative to transsexual men.

Cameron's new book is only available as a World Wide Web-accessible eBook, which will allow a greater distribution than many transgender-themed books are able to attain.  It can be reached by anyone with a modern web browser and computer access at

"I created ManTool because I knew that people needed more information about FtM surgery options.  While Body Alchemy (my first hardcopy book published by Cleis Press in 1996) has been very successful, I feel that an ebook has great potential to reach many more people, anywhere in the world.  ManTool: The Nuts and Bolts of Female-To-Male Surgery is a bold, experimental venture in ebook publishing. I believe electronic publishing offers definite advantages in access and availability for transgendered authors and readers."

Cameron's new book is only available as a World Wide Web-accessible eBook, which will allow a greater distribution than many transgender-themed books are able to attain. It can be reached by anyone with a modern web browser and computer access at

TRANS

Hilda Raz' new book, TRANS, will be available from Wesleyan University Press in October. Minnie Bruce Pratt writes, "In these passionate poems, Hilda Raz confronts our human longing for sameness and stability, and our transitory human fate, our constant transformations, the way loss and life are inextricably intertwined. In wildly evocative language, she traces the beauty in the filigree of scars, whether from surgeries or from memories."

Hilda says: "These poems were made during my son Aaron's transsexual transformation and they work to unbraid gender, identity, family, and mother/daughter passion and grief in ways language allows."

Hawaiian Mahu & Transgender Collection

"O Au No Keia: Voices From Hawai'i's Mahu and Transgender Communities" is a collection of oral histories from fifteen male-to-female transgendered people. By sharing their stories, the contributors (who are of different ages, classes, and ethnic backgrounds) allow us to begin to understand what it means to live outside gender norms in a place most outsiders view as "paradise."

"ReCREATIONS" Religion and Spirituality in the Lives of Queer People

Edited and with an Introduction by Catherine Lake When we confront our sexuality in the midst of religious dogma, how do we (re)create ourselves as spiritual and queer identified? What are the imprintings which we must unlearn and unravel so to grow into pride and self-acceptance?

In response to these questions, Queer Press proudly presents ReCREATIONS, a compelling anthology which reveals the distinctive impact of religion and spirituality on and in the lives of queer people. Established and emerging writers from a wide diversity of faiths, give shape to our unique journeys which are voiced through prose, poetry, fiction and essay. Included in this provocative collection are writers who have maintained their traditional religious beliefs while working towards the queer issues of inclusion and acceptance within their temple, mosque or church. Other contributors reveal their experiences in seeking out and finding spiritual paths which create a space for their sexual or gender identities.

With work from Sharon Bridgforth, Irshad Manji, Sulayman X, Candis Graham, Connell O'Donovan, Matthew Link, Daniel Curzon and Alaric Wendell Blair, this anthology serves to dispel the myth that we are neither spiritual nor religious. Sexual awakenings; homophobic abuse in fundamentalist denominations; and the (re)creations of sanctuaries where the queer spirit thrives--this publication resounds with our quest to nurture the queer spirit. ReCREATIONS Religion and Spirituality in the Lives of Queer People is an unprecedented anthology reflecting the unique mandate of Queer Press to promote and explore the diverse expressions of our queer communities.

"TRANS FORMING FAMILIES" by Mary Boenke

A great book edited and self-published by Mary Boenke. The book is a collection of stories by mothers of very young gender variant children, parents of adult transgendered folks, spouses and partners, and even grandparents, siblings and friends. Written mostly by "ordinary people", who have all struggled from bewilderment to acceptance and even celebration, these 31 stories serve as role models for all those families who are still hurting, rejecting, or feeling isolated -- or who have already "arrived"!

The subjects vary greatly, -- both FTM's and MTF's, intersexed persons, cross-dressers, adults and children, mostly American, but several from other countries; some even with physical disabilities, and from all walks of life. But all are stories of profound caring, stories of pioneering families who put love above all else and come out accepting, even celebrating the courage and specialness of their transgendered loved one.

---------------------------------------------

This site is designed to serve the needs and interests of women who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (including female-to-male and male-to female trans* people in any state of transition), and who are identified ethnicially or culturally with the Arab world, regardless of where they live. This includes women of mixed ethnic heritage, and women who are from non-Arab minority groups that exist within the Arab world. While inevitably terminology is going to disappoint us and may feel imposed, we felt it important to name the groups that we intend to serve as best we can.

This site is a work in progress. In the future we hope to include audio, film, multimedia projects, photography, and art as well as writing.

THE SCIENCES MAGAZINE REVISITS INTERSEX CONTROVERSY

The current issue of The Sciences magazine features a cover article by Anne Fausto-Sterling on the emerging recognition that intersexuality tests medical values and social norms. Less than four years ago, Fausto-Sterling notes, intersex people were picketing medical conferences.

In May, Intersex Society founder Cheryl Chase delivered the closing talk to the annual meeting of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society. Perhaps equally remarkably, many of the speakers who preceded her at the session had already spoken of the need to scrap current practices (centered on surgery), replacing them with treatment based on counseling.

This is an invaluable follow-up to "The Five Sexes," which created quite an uproar when it appeared in 1993. That article was denounced as "madness" in a paid New York Times by the Catholic League, cited by ultra-conservatives at the UN-sponsored Beijing Conference for Women in 1995, denounced by the Family Research Council, and even offered as reason to reject U.S. participation in the International Criminal Court.

In the real world, however, people are quite frequently born intersex, and intersex people deserve to be treated with the same respect for person and autonomy as anyone else.

Both Sides Now

Hello All

The long awaited website for "Both Sides Now" a documentary about female-to-male transsexuals who bore children is now up and running. The site is meant to serve as information about the documentary but the most interesting feature is that we will be updating the site as we travel across the country interviewing all the participants. Please do three things:

1. Bookmark this site and check it frequently as we will be updating it every couple of days
2. Pass this email on to everyone you know
3. Put a link to this site on your website (if you have one, obviously)

You can also put in a pre-release order for the film. Go to the sales area of the site and drop us a line and put in your requests to make sure you have a copy when it is released this summer! Again, all efforts for this film have been grassroots based and we appreciate your help to continue those efforts. Pass the info on and make sure you check back to find out more about our upcoming fundraiser to be held in NYC in early April 2003.
